I have to say I am not exactly popular in the New Age communities, and I am perfectly okay with it! Why am I okay with the fact that I am not particularly liked? Because I never resort to toxic positivity and spiritual bypassing when I not only do tarot readings, but my content has nothing of the sort! I am a realist, and sometimes I admit I lean towards pessimism, but I am also cautiously optimistic when there is a reason. Either way, I don’t buy into any of the woo-woo crap like so many other mediums and tarot readers and other psychics do.
The other problem is that these readers will encourage you to adopt dangerous toxic positivity and spiritual bypassing habits because they will convince you that is the only way to think to become “evolved.” I am telling you that is false and dangerous!
Let’s delve into toxic positivity and spiritual bypassing a little further.

Understanding Basics Of Spiritual Bypassing And Toxic Positivity
You should know a few things about toxic positivity and spiritual bypassing.
For starters, toxic positivity believes that everything will work out in the end if you stay positive. This leads to people suppressing their negative emotions and refusing to deal with their problems head-on.
On the other hand, spiritual bypassing is when people use spirituality to avoid dealing with their issues. For example, they might believe they’re “above” emotions or don’t need to deal with their problems because they’re on a “higher spiritual path.”
Both of these approaches are unhealthy and can lead to further problems. If you’re struggling with toxic positivity or spiritual bypassing, seeking help from a therapist or other mental health professional is essential.
There’s no shame in admitting that you need help to deal with your problems. Toxic positivity and spiritual bypassing are serious issues that can wreak havoc on your life if left unchecked. So if you’re struggling, please reach out for help. You deserve to live a happy and healthy life. But, toxic positivity and spiritual bypassing don’t have to be a part of it.
What Is Toxic Positivity?
Toxic positivity believes that you should always think and feel positive, no matter what. This means suppressing negative emotions like sadness, anger, fear, and anxiety.
Toxic positivity can be harmful because it:
- Invalidates people’s experiences and emotions
- Pressures people to put on a “happy face” all the time
- It can lead to burnout
- Can make people feel worse about themselves
If you’re feeling down, it’s okay to express those feelings. However, you don’t have to pretend to be happy. Allow yourself to handle all of your emotions, good and bad. Seek out supportive people who will listen to you and validate your experiences. Toxic positivity is not the answer.
Now that you know about toxic positivity let’s talk more about spiritual bypassing.
What Is Spiritual Bypassing?
Spiritual bypassing is a term that psychologist John Welwood first coined in 1984. It refers to the tendency for people to use spiritual beliefs and practices to avoid dealing with their personal issues and problems.
While spiritual bypassing can be helpful in some ways, it can also lead to serious problems down the road. Here are some things you should know about spiritual bypassing:
It’s Not Always Bad
Spiritual bypassing isn’t always a bad thing. In fact, it can be helpful in some situations. For example, if you’re going through a tough time and turn to your spirituality for comfort, that can be good.
However, spiritual bypassing can become a problem when it’s used as a way to avoid dealing with personal issues. If you’re using your spirituality to num out or escape from your problems, that’s when it becomes an issue.
It Can Lead to Serious Problems
If spiritual bypassing is used as a way to avoid dealing with personal issues, it can lead to serious problems down the road. These problems can include:
- Denial of reality: If you’re using your spirituality to deny the existence of specific problems or challenges in your life, that can lead to serious difficulties later on.
- Avoidance of emotions: If you’re using your spirituality to avoid difficult emotions like sadness, anger, or fear, that can lead to emotional problems down the road.
- Spiritual materialism: If you’re using your spirituality to try to acquire things like wealth, power, or prestige, that can lead to greed and other problems.
It’s Not Always Obvious
Spiritual bypassing can be challenging to spot because it’s not always obvious. In some cases, people may not even realize they’re doing it. Here are some signs that someone might be spiritual bypassing:
- They’re constantly trying to fix things or change themselves.
- They have a lot of judgment towards others.
- They continuously seek spiritual experiences but never find lasting peace or satisfaction.
It’s Important to Be Aware of It
Even if you’re not spiritual bypassing yourself, it’s essential to be aware of it. This is because spiritual bypassing can lead to serious problems down the road. So if you see someone spiritual bypassing, gently point it out to them and help them become more aware of it.
It Takes Work to Overcome It
If you find that you’re spiritual bypassing, it’s essential to do the work to overcome it. This means facing your personal issues head-on and healthily working through them. It’s not easy, but it’s worth it.
However, suppose a reader tells you these words and phrases when they do sessions for you. In that case, you will want not to listen and not to take it seriously because they are examples of toxic positivity and spiritual bypassing:
- Your trauma is a gift to help you evolve and grow.
- You have to have compassion for your bullies/abusers/tormenters and forgive them because they are learning too, or are younger souls than you are as they are learning.
- Allowing low vibe emotions such as depression and anxiety are not helping you evolve.
- You have to think positive thoughts, even in adversity, and push out any negative emotions.
- If you don’t forgive, you are only bringing negative karma onto yourself.
- Be the bigger person and take the higher road no matter what.
Here is the thing. If you go to a past life reader and they tell you that you are dealing with challenges because of actions you did in a previous life, or if a medium means your soul chose to evolve, that is fine. You may welcome that information.
However, you want to beware that if they invalidate your despair, grief, or any difficult emotions you are having, then that is when you want to run from them. A good reader will tell you what they feel and see and validate your experiences and emotions – and they will not tell you that you have to rise above any emotion.
