Are you interested in doing tarot readings but you are hesitant because you have heard there are so many rules you must abide by before and when you read your cards? Well, as you know, there are many misconceptions about tarot as it is. However, I won’t get into all of the myths today when it comes to tarot in general. What I plan to focus on right now are the myths that surround what you need to do in order to do a tarot reading. And hopefully, after you read this, you will know what you can do when you do a tarot reading. Are you ready? Let’s bust 5 myths right now about what you need to do when you do a tarot reading.

Myth #1 – You Must Put A Load Of Crystals On Your Cards To Cleanse Them Before Using Them
Cleansing your cards is a good idea before you begin to read them. But that doesn’t have to involve throwing a bunch of crystals on them. You don’t have to do that at all. There are many ways you can cleanse them. You can leave the cards on your window sill overnight so the moonlight is exposed to them. You can also say a cleansing prayer or throw some Kosher salt on them and yell out Now you are clean. Whatever your definition of cleansing happens to be, that is good enough!
Myth #2 – You Must Light Incense, Use Crystals, And Make Your Surroundings Mystical During A Reading
You can choose to create a mystical setting or not while you are doing a reading. If you don’t like incense, then don’t use it. If you don’t have crystals, then that is fine too. If your bedroom is not made up and the covers are not tidy on your bed but that is the place where you want to do the reading anyway, then, by all means, go for it.
It is a good idea to have some crystals to help sharpen intuition such as the Quartz crystal, Aquamarine, Amethyst, or Celestine. It is also a good idea to have crystals to protect you from any negativity such as the Jasper, Black Tourmaline, or Black Obsidian. But calling upon ArchAngel Michael and simply asking for protection will work just as well. In other words, protection is necessary because you only want your guides to deliver the messages through the cards – not posers. But using crystals is an option.
Myth #3 – You Must Use A Dark Velvet Cloth To Cover Your Table
It is said that it is recommended to store your cards in a dark case because it helps keep the negative forces away. However, you can read your cards on any type of surface you want. If you want to read your cards on your bed, go for it. If you want to read your cards on your wooden or white kitchen table without a tablecloth, go for it. If you want to read your cards on a picnic table, go for it! You get the point!
Myth #4 – You Have To Be A Spiritual Enlightened Being To Do Readings
No, no and no! Get that notion out of your head right now. You do readings because you want to do readings!! And you don’t have to change who you are while you do readings, that is unless you want to. If you like to cuss, if you are the procrastinating type, or if you refuse to forgive your old high school bullies from back in the day (because why should they deserve forgiveness which is another topic to be discussed in the future), then don’t change for the sake of doing readings. Just keep being you, the human you, not the enlightened you (again unless that is your choice to become that way).
Myth #5 – You Must Start Reading With The Rider-Waite Tarot Deck If You Are A Newbie
Absolutely not! That is not the deck I started reading with. And that is not the deck I have ever used for readings. Why? Because I was never attracted to that deck at all. You choose the deck that you are the most attracted to, and all you need to do is go to either your local metaphysical shop to pick one up – or just buy a deck that you know you’ll love on Amazon.
The only reason that many tarot teachers recommend the Rider-Waite tarot deck to start reading is that it is a teaching set. On the same token, you don’t want to pick up a deck that is too difficult to use if you are a newbie either. Just rely on your intuition when it comes to you picking out the card you want. That is because it is telling you that the deck you are attracted to is the one you are meant to use!
Now that I have busted these tarot reading myths for you, you have no reason to delay doing readings. Because there really are no set rules when it comes to reading the tarot. Just recommendations, that you can choose to utilize – or not!
