The Eight of Cups (Eight of Ice in the Penguin tarot) is leaving anything that is emotionally fulfilling or something that is not fulfilling in any way behind. You are disappointed but you also know that there is no point in hoping anything will be better with a situation, so you end up walking away from it.
This can be painful to do as you were at one time emotionally tied to the thing that you stuck to but you are realizing it is not serving your highest good. Therefore, you know the best thing to do is to leave it behind. It is painful but necessary. You are sad and you are disappointed but it is best to walk away. It can be a relationship that has gone sour or a friendship. Those are hard to let go but are very necessary.
The Eight of Cups can also be indicative of escaping a troubling situation as well that needs to be dealt with. Or it can be a sign that you are avoiding an issue that is psychological that needs to be addressed.
When the Eight of Cups comes up in reverse, it is a sign that you are undecided with whether you should stick around something unfulfilling or not. You are not sure if you should walk away or try one more time. It can also represent drifting aimlessly from one thing to the next.
Astrologically this card is linked to Saturn in Pisces.
